Religious practices have always influenced the traditional attire of every community. Also these different customs have given birth to different piece of clothing that is exclusively used to carry out their respective religious practice. The Jewish prayer shawl is one such dress code which has become an intricate part of Judaica and the Jewish religion. It is also known as the tallit or tzizit among the Jewish community. Like many other attires, the Tallit has also undergone a lot of change. In this post I will be telling you about the history of this famous garment and also how it is now in today’s time. Often I come across comments on the web where people are complaining about not being able to find the perfect Judaica store that can cater to their needs with the best products in the market. The History Of Jewish Prayer Shawl:

The prayer shawl saw its inception as the Jewish Tallit in the ancient times and was originally worn by men in ancient times. A very significant thing about it was that at the corners of the Tallit, you can see tassels are attached in fulfillment of the commandment of Zizit that can be found in the book of Numbers.

With time the Tallit was lost from the daily habit as most of the Jews assimilated with their Gentile neighbors following their exile. Later the Tallit became a strictly religious garment used for prayer and thus the use of the phrase "prayer shawl" came into existence.

Today's Prayer Shawl:

In today's time, the prayer shawl has changed a great deal from how it was. If we take the reference from the Encyclopedia Judaica, you can see that the first Tallit was usually made either of wool or of linen and basically resembled the Abayahwhich is still worn by the Bedouin for protection against the weather.

Nowadays, you can find designer tallits, ones that come with modern touch. They are usually white and made of wool, cotton or silk. Until recently, one could find prayer shawlsthat have nothing else but black stripes. There are many designers today who in remembrance of the blue thread of the zizithare incorporating blue woven stripes into the material. Also if you look among the less orthodox sects, you can also find stripes of maroon, white, purple, gold, silver, rainbow, pink and combinations of colored stripes with metallic threads.

It’s obvious that history had influenced a lot of things we use nowadays and dressing is something that perhaps reflects this fact the most. From the age of renaissance to the current age, if we see the gradual development or the change of our attire, you can trace the influence of history quite easily. But it’s not just history but also the mythological references have their role in it. And when it comes to religious attires, this influence is most evident. The Lion of Judah Tallit prayer shawl is one such example. So, here in this post I will be telling you the story behind this unique prayer attire and its mythological significance. So, if you are still oblivious to its story and facts then this post is dedicated to you. Plus, I will be also telling a source where I found one such exquisite piece to gift one of my relative. So snug up and read on.

How I came to know about the Lion of Judah Tallit prayer shawl:

It was one of my relative who first told me about this unique piece of Tallit when I visited him in a Bar Mitzva. The moment I first saw it, I was amazed by its beauty and the first thing that intrigued me the most was its name. So, I decided to take it up to the internet and find out the story behind the phrase ‘Lion Of Judah’. Below I am listing all that I have found about this particular legend.

History: Basically, the Lion of Judah is the symbol of the Hebrew tribe of Judah (the Jewish tribe). According to the Torah, the tribe consists of the descendants of Judah, the fourth son of Jacob. This affinity or the connection between Judah and the lion which was most likely an Asiatic one, can first be found in the blessing given by Jacob to his son Judah in the Book of Genesis.

One can also find its reference in the Book of Revelation, as a term representing Jesus, according to Christian theology. The lion of Judah also served as titles of the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie and hence can be found on the flag of Ethiopia from 1897-1974. Because of its association with Selassie, it continues to be an important symbol among members of the Rastafari movement.

If you go through the Bible, then in Genesis, you can find the patriarch Jacob ("Israel") giving that symbol to his tribe when he refers to his son Judah as a "Young Lion" while blessing him. Due to the nuance of Jewish naming tradition the Hebrew name and the substitute name are often combined as a pair, much similar in this case. For many years, The Lion of Judah was used as a Jewish symbol. Since, Jerusalem was the capital of the Kingdom of Judah, in 1950 the Lion of Judah was included in the Emblem of Jerusalem. One can find it on the Zechariah Seal as well.

How I Found One Such Piece:

So after digging up all these facts from the internet, I was also very eager to find one such piece for myself and here again my relative helped me out. He told me about the store from where he found his own piece. And upon his recommendation, I visited the convenient store of Galilee Silks and explored their stock of hand-painted Lion of Judah Tallit prayer shawls. These exquisite pieces are made of polyester and they have blessing on the Atara.

If you want to have one such piece for yourself then you can visit this web store and explore their stocks. This can be a start for you as you can search as much as you want over the web to find the perfect Lion of Judah prayer shawls. Also, if you have any further queries or concerns about this post, feel free to mention them in the comments section and I will be addressing them in the upcoming posts. So stay tuned for more related updates.

Tallit for Women: Surprising Trends Taking World by Storm

Let’s take stock of the hot—if controversial—crossing of Jewish clothing and today’s fashion trend. While flipping through one of the Summer/Spring Magazines that unfathomably appeared lying on my living room floor, I noticed a rather new and amazing fashion item in one of their editorials ....a Tallit.

f:id:galileesilks:20180409140627j:plain

Have you thought about tallit today?

The striking white fabric, the falling tassels, the simple colored stripes – the Tallit (also known as Jewish prayer shawl) is an elegant and immediately recognizable image of Judaism and prayer. This exemplary item is symbolically used in every day prayer, over the morning synagogue, Jewish wedding canopy, and to cover the Ark in the synagogue.

Tallit for women was a matter of controversy in earlier days. But in recent times, tallitot have become a trending fashion and Jewish women around the world love wearing tallit. We at Galilee Silks would love to do justice considering the modern fashion trend.

Look around and you’ll see that we are wildly advancing into a post-modern religious insurgency, opening up a universe of individual interpretation desperate to modernize yet stay aware of deep-rooted convictions. The tallit for women serves as an intense analogy for the tenuous connection amongst conventional and modern.

f:id:galileesilks:20180409140720j:plain

Old is the New Fashion?

Designers are designing upon modern garment and fashion trends in their mission to create a more present day take on the traditional tallit. So you’ll discover glorious metallic strings, luxurious natural fibers of silk, and colorful and intricate weaving.

Rock That Tallit

Fashion icons – from Marie Claire to Vogue Magazines are embracing Jewish-related sartorial choices today. So, it’s high time to embrace our beautiful religious garments with utter pride.

Is the Jewish Prayer Shawl Slowly Evolving as A Fashion Statement?

Now, in the most recent act of Jewish cultural appropriation by the fashion world, a man was discerned attending New York Fashion Week wearing a real, honest-to-god tallit over his jacket.

The photo, clicked by a photographer, demonstrates the man draping the shawl over a long dark fleece coat paired with a black beanie and what gives off an impression of being a navy jumpsuit.

Moreover, fashion is first and foremost about style —perhaps, only about style—and there’s no denying the fact that a tallit for women looks freaking cool. They’re big, they’re sensational, and they have a marvelous visual depiction and great moderate color scheme. They are often handcrafted, and of pure, hand-dyed silk. They have an awesome old world feel blended with a feeling of old tribalism —an unthinkable mix to resist for the truly committed fashionista, who always searches for amalgamation of above all.
